Wiki FAQs

WikiAnswers runs on a highly-customized version of the MediaWiki system that we call "Wiki FAQs".

Wikis

A wiki is a website collaboratively written and edited by its users.

Many websites are interactive. For example, it's very common for sites to have discussion forums where you can post your own comments. A wiki is something more radical. On a wiki, you can improve entire web pages — even when that means changing what other people have written. Regular visitors have the ability to shape everything.

Why aren't wikis destroyed by vandals and spammers? Many kids do find it amusing to add dirty words to web pages. But vandals tend to have short attention spans. It's quick and easy for well-intentioned visitors to reverse the damage. Despite what most of us expect at first, it works. There are more good guys than bad guys out there.

FAQs

Our Q&A is designed to improve upon the old Internet concept of "FAQs." As may know, FAQs are collections of Frequently Asked Questions and their answers.

Since the beginning of the Internet people have been generously helping answer questions for each other: in newsgroups, discussion forums, email, etc. To prevent the same questions from getting asked and answered over and over again people started to create FAQs.

The problem with FAQs is that they get stale. They tend to be written by one person. They get outdated when the moderator loses interest. They disappear or slowly fade away.

Wiki FAQs

Our Wiki FAQs system — WikiAnswers — is designed to be dynamic. We grow Q&A through an organic process.

Some people see WikiAnswers as simply a question and answer site. Asking and answering questions is all they need or want to do. But this is just the beginning of the wiki process. Other contributors continue to improve the questions and answers: fixing the wording of questions ... making them more universal ... merging duplicates together ... adding to answers ... categorizing and recategorizing ....

What starts out as Q&A between individuals is constantly being developed into better and better information resources for the whole world to use.
