Whenever the check engine light comes on it means that your computer has detected an anomaly. Check the code to see what the computer has stored. Code scanners are not very expensive and can help you figure out how your car is doing. They are available at most DIY auto parts stores.

Definitely have it checked out. Mine would flash on and off and then not come back on for a few days or weeks. The next thing I knew, I needed to have a new engine because there was no oil left even though I kept up on service. My oil light didn't even come on to warn me!
