the fuel filter on my 98 malibu is located back by the tank. it is set slightly in front of the two rear tires in the middle. its easily spotted when under the car, its a silver cylinder about 5 inches long (at least mine was) and has a gas line attached at both ends. its pretty simple to access and change. good luck!
