What is the definition of being detained by a police officer?

[Edit]

Answer

You are being detained if you are not free to leave. For instance, being stopped for speeding is an example of being detained. You do not have the right to just drive away. This is different though from a custodial arrest which is when you are under direct control of the officer such as in handcuffs and in the back of the squad car.

Being held involuntarily for investigative purposes.
