The G doesn't represent anything, it's just a model designation like M, FX etc. The 35 represents 3.5L, the size of the engine. The new G37 coupe will have a 3.7L engine which is why the model number changed.

This is a pretty standard convention and can be seen in BMW 330 etc (3.0 Liter engine within the 3 series) Volvo C60 2.5t (2.5L engine (turbo)
