What does it mean when the overdrive light blinks and the engine light is on in a '97 Mazda 626 DX 4 cylinder? In: Mazda 626 [Edit categories] |

Answer
It could mean: the overdrive section in the transmision is stuck. I would call a Mazda dealer and ask for the service manager. He can give you some good advice.
Answer
Our O/D light (99- 626 4cyl auto) came on recently on a long trip. Trans. got warm, spewed some trans. fluid through vent tube. found out that we needed a transmission cooler installed-350.00. Works great now.
Answer
This happened with my 99 mazda 626 and it turned out to be a warped valve body. The mechanic told us that this was a common occurance with mazda and small ford front wheel drive transmissions.
Answer
That happened to my transmission in my 1997 mazda 626 and I had to change out the entire transmission, thats what it means for most people. I believe what it is that the Ford transmission has a higher pressure build up for the mazda tranny, and eventually they blow, and tranny fluid gets everywhere.
Answer
I am driving on the third rebuild of my 98 Mazda 626 4-cyl transmission. The shop suggested installing a transmission cooler when the transmission was last rebuilt which I did. The "overdrive off" indicator has never flashed before but did on our last road trip. The transmission pushed fluid through the vent tube on the air filter housing. It became so overheated that it burnt the fluid and we had to stop at a motel overnight. The next day, we completed our trip without incident - no flashing overdrive off indicator. I will have the fluid changed and check for maybe a blocked or air-locked transmission oil cooler. I don't think I will ever own another Mazda!
