This happened to me when my Throttle Position Sensor went out. The trac light came on and the transmission started shifting roughly. The sensor costs about $30 at Autozone and is very easy to replace. Problem solved.

it means the car has low traction, such as spinning on gravel, or in wet grass.

I also had this problem with the light on constantly after I had new tires put on. My brother, a mechanic for 20+ years, told me that if the tires were just a slight bit out of round, it may cause this problem. It resolved itself in about 10 days.
