Read the terms of use and understand what the liabilities are and the risks you are taking.
Understand the basics about online security and insure the site that you are sending your credit card number to is secure. Always make sure that when you are asked for your credit card information that your web site uses a www.htpps prefice (the s is the sign you are on a secure site).
On-Line auctions you can do what is called Sniping - Basically when you want to buy something say on e-bay and there is loads of bidders you wait until the last minute and then bid.
Use a virtual credit card number (see link to plasticrewards.com article below for a good article on how to do that).
