When that happened to me I opened the gauge cluster up and manually fixed the needle. I did that because I was adding aftermarket glow gauges, so I was in there anyways. The only problem is that every once in a while after filling up the tank,the needle lingers for awhile at right about three and half quarters marker.

I use a wire (speaker wire works) and just bend inot a little hook at the end and put it through the Odometer reset button hole. It takes a little jiggling but you can get it.

sThis happened to me too. Simply get a paper clip and put it through the spedometer travel knob. Then with the tip of the paper clip simply move the gas gauge its easy but I also freaked out. I wish I had thought of this before I took half the dash apart

This same thing happened to my sisters on numerous occasions when the battery was disconnected. A the first couple of times happened after the dealer did work. From that we learned that they removied the instrument cluster and pretty much did the same as the fellows who previously posted...that is just bend the needle just enought to get over teh small post and presto thats it.Does any one know why this happens to the malibu?

I had that happen to me and I used a coat hanger and put it through the odometer hole and wiggled it up there.

I had the same problem when I replaced my battery. I just took a small paper clip and stretched it out to be a straight line. At the end I made a small hook in the shape of a U and stuck it through the odometer reset whole. I takes some patience, but grab the gauge hand and pull it toward you to get over the stop line, this will put the hand in the right position.
yeah this seems to happen to alot of GM vehicles ive doen work on and honestly im not sure why this happens
